Front Clip vs. Back Clip vs. Duel Clip Dog Harnesses
Putting a harness on your dog can be challenging, especially if your dog fears it or thinks of it as something negative. Before choosing a harness for your dog, you need to make sure that it will be comfortable for them and don’t cause any pain.
How to choose the perfect harness for your dog?
Having a dog involves many responsibilities. Dog walking is an essential and exciting part of having a dog. Besides maintaining a good exercise routine, it gives you plenty of time to bond with your dog. And your dogs enjoy it even more! Developing the best relationship with your dog requires proper training.
But for that, you need to train your dog properly to regulate the pace while walking and avoid excessive pulling. And when it comes to that, harnesses play a significant role. Some dogs get easily adjusted to the concept of harnesses, but it is a little tougher and even scary for others.
Selecting the perfect harness depends on the needs of your dog. You need to choose the best one keeping in mind your dog’s behavior. But you also need to ensure that it doesn’t hurt your dog or restrict their movements. There are essentially three types of harnesses- Front Clip, Back Clip, and Dual Clip. Let’s find out how they are different from each other.
The difference between- Front Clip, Back Clip, and Dual Clip Harnesses
For a fresher, all of these harnesses will look almost the same. You cannot identify the difference just by looking at them. But all of these harnesses carry different functions. Meaning all three harnesses give different controls and experiences to you and your dog.
Front Clip Harness
As the name suggests, Front clip harnesses have a front leash attachment placed towards the center of the dog’s chest. These harnesses give you more control over your dog to make your dog walks better. If your dog has a habit of pulling too much, you can use these leashes to avoid that. These harnesses work best for reactive or fearful dogs. You can pull your dog to face you whenever you feel that they are being scared. You can also avoid your dog getting anxious with fearful or dangerous interactions by changing their direction using this leash.
Dog trainers majorly use front Clip Harness because it provides them plenty of control over their dogs. To train your dogs, grabbing their focus and attention is difficult because they get easily distracted by anything around them. So, this leash allows you to turn your dog towards you when you need their attention for better training purposes. While using this clip, you need to ensure that you are not pulling hard at it. Slightly move your dogs towards you and release the pressure to avoid causing any pain.
Disadvantages:
You might face tangling issues. If you decide to buy a long leash for your dog, using a front clip harness can be tricky. Your dog might get trapped when you try to pull.
Back Clip Harness
These harnesses clip you to the back of your dog. The Back Clip harnesses are favorite among dog owners and their pets because they can be easily put on, and your dog will get adjusted to it in no time. If you like to go on long walks with your dog and use long leashes to give them a free space to roam around, then the Black Clip harness is well suited for your needs as it avoids tangling.
These harnesses are the most comfortable for dogs as they keep their neck area safe. So, if your dog has a delicate throat or likes to pull but gets easily damaged, this harness would work best for them. Also, if you have a Brach cephalic breed, then a back clip harness would be safe for them.
Disadvantages:
These are comfortable for dogs, but these harnesses don’t give you much control over your dog. So, if your dog is not trained properly or pulls too hard, then you might want to avoid the Back Clip harnesses.
Dual Clip Harness
As the name suggests, the dual clip harness has two clips- one attached to your dog’s back and one to the front. So, this type of harness performs the function of both the harnesses mentioned above. The dual clip harness gives you maximum control over your dog, and you can use any of the clips according to the need and behavior of your dog. At first, only trainers used them, but now the dual clip harness is gaining popularity among many people. It is an excellent option if your dog is a determined puller.
Disadvantages:
Take special care while using this, as tightening harnesses exert slight pressure on your pet to stop them. But too much pressure can cause a great deal of discomfort for your pet and even restrict their movements.
